Construction Laborer/Construction and Related Workers

WWRC’s Building Trades Training Program currently offers two (2) Career Pathways (Construction Laborer & Construction and Related Workers).

• Construction Laborer (18 weeks, 1 semester)
• Construction and Related Workers (18 weeks, 1 semester)

A student may complete one (1) Career Pathway (Construction Laborer) or two (2) Career Pathways (Construction Laborer and Construction and Related Workers)

If demonstrating proper competency per the Vocational Skills Records (VSR’s) on each Career Pathway.

Each Training Program curriculum and expected knowledge, skills, and abilities are developed in partnership with a designated Occupational Advisory Committee..

Training Program Description

WWRC's Building Trades Training Program is derived from an approved program by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).

By completing core assessment tasks prior to enrolling in any Career Pathway within the Building Trades Training Program, all newly enrolled students gain an introductory knowledge of Masonry, Carpentry, Plumbing, Electricity, and HVAC.

Students also receive an OSHA 10-Hour Training that teaches basic safety and health information to entry-level workers in construction and general industry. It is part of the OSHA Outreach Training Program, which explains serious workplace hazards, workers' rights, employer responsibilities and how to file an OSHA complaint.

Students enrolled in the Building Trades Training Program are given the opportunity to obtain a basic OSHA 10 certification, Fundamentals of Construction Certificate, the OSHA 30 Credential, and the Virginia Career Readiness Certificate.

At the completion of the training program, graduates are competent in the following:

OSHA 10-Hour Training teaches basic safety and health information to entry-level workers in construction and general industry. It is part of the OSHA Outreach Training Program, which explains serious workplace hazards, workers' rights, employer responsibilities and how to file an OSHA complaint.

Fundamentals of Construction Foundations Industry-based credential is included in NOCTI’s Foundational assessment battery. Foundational assessments measure technical skills at the occupational level and include items which gauge factual and theoretical knowledge.

OSHA 30-Hour Construction course is designed for supervisors in construction, demolition, building development and other fields in the construction industry. It includes a detailed overview of the most common risks of construction work, including fall hazards, caught-in or -between hazards, struck-by hazards and electrocution.

Completion Requirements: A student must demonstrate mastery of a minimum 80% of core competencies, as documented on the Vocational Skills Record to be eligible for graduation.
Employment Settings: Graduates of the Building Trades Training Program acquire the skills and knowledge for employment in entry-level positions in the Construction field. Job Titles may include: Construction Laborer, Construction Worker, Site Work Laborer, Toolman.
