Behavioral Health Services

Behavioral Health Services Department Clinicians function as part of the WWRC Medical Rehabilitation Team to assist clients in achieving their optimal level of independence in community living. The Department is staffed by licensed clinical psychologists and licensed professional counselors.

Psychological Evaluations

Clients participating in either a WWRC residential rehabilitation program, WWRC outpatient rehabilitation program or a local rehabilitation provider program may be referred for psychological evaluations to determine:

  • feasibility for a service at the WWRC,
  • rehabilitation, post-secondary and/or worksite needs related to a cognitive, chemical, and/or emotional disorder; or
  • appropriate accommodations for work, post-secondary school, or standardized examinations such as the GED or SAT.

Intervention and Treatment

Following a psychological evaluation, the clinician may recommend a group or individual therapy program to enhance the outcomes for a client participating in a vocational , medical, or pre-employment readiness and education program at WWRC.

Medical Case Management

The Medical Case Manager acts on behalf of clients as their advocate and provides service coordination of the physician-ordered plan of care. The goal of services provided is to improve independence and/or employability. The case manager is the liaison between the DRS sponsor and the WWRC Medical Rehabilitation Team.

  • Reviews preadmission chart and gathers information needed for admission
  • Coordinates, schedules and leads program meetings, which include
    • plan development
    • progress reviews
    • discharge meetings
  • Communicates medical rehabilitation planning to the client, family and DRS sponsor
  • Coordinates the scheduling of medical and vocational services
  • Facilitates discharge planning
  • Coordinates community services following WWRC program completion

Rehabilitation Engineering

WWRC has access to Rehabilitation Engineering services onsite and in collaboration with DARS regional rehabilitation engineers to modify, customize, or fabricate assistive technology to enable individuals with disabilities to live more independently. WWRC maintains a large fabrication shop with full fabrication capability.

Program Goal

The goal of rehabilitation engineering is to provide clients with recommendations, guidance, and customized assistive devices. When jobsite accommodations are needed for a client to be successfully employed, these services may be available to an employer through coordination with a regional rehabilitation engineer. The scope of rehabilitation engineering services is as diverse as the challenges that WWRC clients encounter.

  • Work process accommodations to optimize employee performance
  • Customization of assistive technology provided through WWRC Assistive Technology teams
  • Design and fabrication of new assistive technology when client needs are not matched by available technology.

Rehabilitation Medicine

The Medical Rehabilitation Program is managed by a physician who is an experienced and Board Certified Specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is responsible for all the clinical services provided at WWRC including:

Medical Rehabilitation Services Overseen by Physician

  • Diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic and neurologic disability and impairments
  • Design and prescription of medical rehabilitation plan of care
  • Medication and assistive technology prescription
  • Specialty outpatient clinics
  • Behavioral health and neuropsychology services
  • Episodic medical care for residential clients

WWRC admissions criteria require clients be medically stable and able to fully participate in their rehabilitation program.  However, WWRC provides 24/7 nursing and attendant care to clients residing at the Center under the direction of the WWRC Physician. WWRC partners with the regional medical center (Augusta Health) to provide emergency and acute medical care, if needed.



Rehabilitation Nursing

Nursing staff provide direct personal care, education on health and self advocacy, and episodic nursing interventions for clients in comprehensive rehabilitation programs who live in all of WWRC’s residency options: Barnett Hall, Carter-Ashley Hall and Rothrock Hall. Nursing staff advocate for the highest quality nursing services which support a client's fullest participation in an individualized rehabilitation program to achieve optimal personal independence and employment when returning home.

Rothrock Hall

Clients with physical and/or cognitive disabilities requiring assistance with their personal care and/or monitoring while receiving therapy and/or vocational services use Rothrock Hall as their residential option.  Each client is assigned a Primary Nurse who assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates the client's individual plan of care. The Primary Nurse collaborates with the client, family, and WWRC rehabilitation team to monitor progress towards the client’s goals.

Health Clinic

Clients residing in Barnett Hall, Carter-Ashley Hall, or who attend WWRC as a day student may access health care services in this clinic staffed by nurses working under the direction of the WWRC Physician or Physician’s Assistant.
