Brain Injury

Brain Injury Clinic

Overview

Acquired Brain Injury or ABI, refers to all non-congenital/non-developmental/non-degenerative injuries to the brain that result in sensory, physical, cognitive or behavioral problems. The most common types of ABI addressed at WWRC are traumatic brain injury, stroke, anoxic injury, brain tumor/cancer, and a smaller number of clients with histories of infectious disease or other etiologies. WWRC provides comprehensive medical rehabilitation services for individuals with acquired brain injury who demonstrate rehabilitative and vocational potential. Individualized service plans are developed that reflect findings and recommendations of initial neuropsychological and physical medicine evaluations.  The Brain Injury Clinic is a one-day outpatient service consisting of neuropsychological and physical medicine evaluations.

Brain Injury Clinic Services

  • Pre-Referral Consultative Services

Assistance is provided to potential clients or referral sources in order to plan for and provide appropriate evaluation and rehabilitation services.  After review of available information, clients with histories of acquired brain injury may be scheduled for an outpatient clinic evaluation or for a stand-alone neuropsychological evaluation.
  • Outpatient Clinic Evaluation Services

A one-day outpatient evaluation for clients with acquired brain injury consists of a neuropsychological evaluation paired with a physical medicine evaluation and medical case management coordination with the referral source. The evaluation findings are summarized in a report documenting the client’s neurobehavioral functioning and recommendations for rehabilitation services at WWRC or within the client’s home community.

Outcomes

Clients and their families who participate in a Brain Injury Clinic evaluation can expect to receive a series of recommendations designed to promote the following:

  • increased knowledge, abilities and use of compensatory strategies,
  • enhanced social, family and community participation,
  • improved independent living skills, and/or
  • enhanced opportunities for employment.
